In my current memoir, I discuss my last meeting with Ntozake Shange in 2018, 5 months before she passed. We gave a joint book reading at NYC’s Hunter College in May of that year. I read book passages and showed a PowerPoint focusing our 45-year friendship. She read from her last poetry anthology, Wild Beauty, mesmerizing the audience with her brilliance and humor.<\/p>\n
We ended with a joint book signing, when my husband Gene Howell snapped the picture of us holding our books. It was to be our last photo together.<\/p>\n

As an artist and designer, I use my relationship with water as a catalysis to the world of symbolic reflection. The dream life, like water becomes a stage for creation without limits. At home in the serenity and solitude of my studio, memories of the face of a woman at the ocean, a young man working at his craft, great monuments, and images of nature join together, divinely guided, in my mind and through my hand to create my art. Influenced by the history of my culture, I choose to embrace the aesthetic and spirituality of the African Diaspora. That choice is neither limiting nor exclusive.
